In exams where each wrong answer costs a third of a mark, how you handle uncertain questions can move your score by several percent.

The two-option rule

If you can confidently eliminate two options, answering is statistically in your favour. If you can only rule out one, flag the question and move on for now.

Three passes

  1. First pass: only the questions you’re sure about
  2. Second pass: questions that yield to a little thought
  3. Third pass: flagged questions, using the two-option rule

Common mistakes

  • Changing your first answer without a solid reason
  • Spending too long on one hard question early on
  • Answering everything “so nothing is left blank”

Medal Academy report cards show your wrong-answer rate separately; if it’s above 20%, practise this strategy more deliberately.

Practise in mock exams

This skill is only built under real conditions. In every mock exam, note how many questions you skipped and got wrong, and track the trend week by week.
