Five lessons from Olympiad medalists we wish we’d known sooner

Through our podcasts and mentoring sessions we’ve spoken with many medalists. Interestingly, their secret was less about study hours and more about habits and mindset.

1. Consistency beats intensity

Four focused hours a day beats one twelve-hour marathon a week.

2. Collect your mistakes

Almost every medalist kept an “error notebook”, recording each wrong answer and why it happened.

3. Take exams early

Don’t wait until you feel “ready”. Taking exams is part of learning.

4. Don’t go it alone

A small study group or a mentor keeps you motivated and stops you drifting off plan.

5. Rest is part of the plan

Enough sleep and one light day a week are part of a successful plan, not wasted time.

“The day I realised I didn’t need to know everything, but to know the important things deeply, my path changed.” — an Olympiad gold medalist
